This curriculum enables primary care providers to distinguish patients with severe uncontrolled asthma from those with severe difficult-to-treat asthma. Through practical guidance, participants will identify key signs and symptoms of severe asthma and risks of future exacerbations, along with expert guidance regarding when to consider referrals to specialists for potential treatment with biologic agents. This knowledge will help improve advanced-level management of patients with severe asthma.

Part 1

Baseline Assessment

Answer the following questions to assess your knowledge of severe uncontrolled asthma management.

Module 1 - Identifying and Escalating Care for Uncontrolled Asthma

Learn how to recognize uncontrolled asthma, make escalation and referral decisions, bridge the gap between guidelines and practice, and integrate collaborative care and referral frameworks into your primary care practice.

Module 2 - Defining and Monitoring Asthma Control

Learn how to understand real-world asthma control, the limitations of subjective assessments, how to apply objective tools and biomarkers, and barriers to implementing these tools in primary care settings.

Final Assessment

Answer the following questions to assess what you have learned about the recognition and management of severe uncontrolled asthma.

Live Group Discussion 1

This Live Group Discussion will focus on a 30-year-old male with recent increases in asthma symptoms and exacerbations. We will also address any questions regarding the baseline/final assessments and the self-study modules.

Part 2

Patient Case Challenge 1 – Jamarcus, age 26, possible severe asthma

You will meet Jamarcus, a man diagnosed with asthma during high school. He presents with increasing asthma symptoms and thrush. Learn more about him to help determine a current diagnosis and treatment strategy.

Patient Case Challenge 2 – Sheila, 42 years old with severe asthma

You will meet Sheila, a middle-aged woman with asthma and multiple comorbidities. Listen to her history and symptoms to help determine a diagnosis and treatment strategy.

Your action plan in severe uncontrolled asthma
